I think my 2 sisters and I have Nazi German cervixes.
Here’s the breakdown of our first deliveries, from first “real” contraction to baby coming out:
- Foowife: 55 hours, finally ending in a c-section
- Jewels: 33 hours, after 3 hours of pushing
- Ski Bum: 27 hours, after 1 hour of pushing
Both Jewels & I stalled at 7 cm and tried to get it going with an epi and pit cranked to the max. Hers worked, mine didn’t.
Ski Bum was only at 4 cm after almost 18 hours after getting induced. Once her midwife broke her water, though, finally her hard labor kicked in and without any drugs at all, she was pushing that baby out in 9 hours.
My older sister AMP and my mom must have inherited the other side of our family tree: Irish cervixes! Their deliveries were like 6-12 hours.
All of us deliver overdue, though – anywhere from 3 days to 4 weeks!
Here a few pics of Ski Bum’s new baby girl – born Saturday, August 9. Yes, her husband (ER resident) delivered their baby with the midwife coaching! Jewels is in the last picture, and was there the whole time.

I am lucky that my Nazi cervix seems to have chosen to emigrate to Ireland just in time for the birth of my last. Apparently my marriage to a man of Irish origin finally took effect (thank goodness!).

You’re tellin’ me, Nazi German cervixes. When I was a week past due, I started telling people that we have cervixes of steel. I swear those little suckers have to be seriously pried open. Since the Wii One was born on our German Grandma’s birthday, I was thinking about her and felt like she was there at times (as was Dad) during those long hours of labor when I was in my “own little birthing world”. She is an awesome woman- what a cool birthday to share and great legacy to follow.
